eBay set out to reimagine how millions of customers receive help across its global marketplace. The company saw an opportunity to evolve from traditional scripted systems toward intelligent, adaptive AI agents that could better serve both customers and support teams.
To achieve this, eBay, Artium, and OpenAI are collaborating to design and build a custom multi-agent solution that transforms the customer service experience end-to-end. The shared goal: deliver faster, more consistent support—at scale.

The Challenge
Customer support at eBay spans thousands of unique scenarios. Among them, 88 distinct use cases were identified as particularly complex—situations requiring nuanced judgment or policy context that traditional systems struggle to handle. While these interactions are currently managed by human representatives, eBay recognized the opportunity to augment these teams with AI agents capable of handling complexity while staying aligned with evolving policies.

The Solution
Artium, an OpenAI agentic solutions partner, is developing an initial set of AI agents that can:
Assist customers in resolving issues directly.
Equip customer service representatives with tools for faster, more accurate responses when human involvement is needed.
The system leverages the OpenAI Agents SDK, Responses API, and real-time models, combined with Artium’s custom-built software to integrate with eBay’s infrastructure. A full-service proof of concept (PoC) will launch for U.S. customers, testing both self- service and assisted-service experiences in production. Beyond the initial rollout, Artium is creating a custom agentic AI platform that will allow eBay to build and evolve new agents for additional use cases over time. Future plans include:
Expanding support to other languages and services.
Introducing speech-based conversational interfaces for a consistent, multi-channel experience across every touchpoint.

This initiative is expected to optimize customer service operations while improving resolution speed, accuracy, and satisfaction. For eBay’s customer service teams, these tools mean more focus on high-value, human work and less time spent on repetitive tasks. For customers, it means help that feels faster, and more personal.
