Best Practices & Methodologies
Katalyst is an exercise suit company that leverages electro-muscle stimulation (EMS) technology to create an extraordinary new way to work out. The result is a 20-minute, full-body workout that engages up to 90% of your muscle fibers. It comes with a mobile app experience that tracks workout progress and offers a library of trainer-led workouts.
01
The Challenge
Katalyst had an incredible product in their next-gen full body exercise suit, but needed to find a way to increase user engagement and improve the user experience. After experiencing an outage on their legacy platform, Katalyst realized they needed Artium to completely re-architect it to be less complex and more resilient at scale so they could avoid any further downtime going forward. Additionally, they needed to improve the cycle of development on their suit which had been very slow and manual.
02
The Solution
Integrate a full-stack team from Artium into Katalyst’s development process. The engagement included software engineers (mobile app, backend, firmware and DevOps), product designers, and product managers working in tight collaboration with the Katalyst team.
After resolving the outage on Katalyst’s legacy platform, Artium was able to transition Katalyst’s backend to a more cost-effective and scalable serverless solution. This allowed Katalyst to ship new features more quickly and improve performance of their mobile application. This was all done without any downtime for customers. One of the new features that Artium helped build was the Activity Tracker for users of their iOS application - which allowed them to see their workout progress so they stay motivated to continue with the program.
We also brought full stack development to an exciting new dimension by including both firmware and hardware in the continuous integration and deployment loop.
Throughout the engagement, Artium helped Kalayst recruit, interview and hire top tier talent to take on all of the roles Artium played so they could continue the work in-house.
03
The Outcome
Katalyst gained an important new feature set for driving user engagement, upgraded their backend architecture for cost and reliability, drastically improved their automated testing harness and ability to deploy updates by improving test coverage and adding critical hardware and firmware components into the loop, and onboarded top talent internally to continue the work indefinitely.
