Verizon is a global telecommunications company with a mission to empower the way that people live, work and play.
With their new 5G Edge compute, it’s now possible for companies to deliver data at a speed and quality unlike ever before.
01
The Challenge
Verizon has the experience and expertise to build low latency video transport systems for broadcasters and major sports leagues and was looking to expand its portfolio to include 5G Edge Compute applications for the industry.
Leveraging Wavelength Zones, a Verizon / AWS edge compute partnership, Verizon identified an opportunity to construct a new video workflow system to aid broadcasters and the leagues to auto-generate high-quality instant video clips. These clips could then be used to provide broadcast replay, game officiating & coaching, player health & safety analysis, and a better fan experience.
Requiring AI expertise in application development, Verizon partnered with Artium to build a prototype to showcase the concept to potential buyers and help validate the concept and workflow use case.
02
The Solution
Artium assembled a team with expertise in design, engineering, and artificial intelligence. The decision was then made to develop a mobile app for iOS, with a focus on delivering an engaging and dynamic prototype.
Over the course of three weeks, the team iteratively refined the app, working daily to develop a mobile experience that could instantly capture and highlight the most exciting moments of a game.
Utilizing OpenAI, Whisper, and prompt engineering, the app was able to accurately identify key moments, such as intense tackles, stunning goals, or notable misses. These highlights were then selected and made instantly available on the mobile app, allowing users to watch and replay them at their convenience
03
The Outcome
Within just 3 short weeks, Artium delivered a working version of the instant replay prototype.
Since then, Verizon has been using the prototype to showcase some of the new and creative ways that sports leagues and broadcasters can use AI powered applications at the edge to improve production, reduce costs and delight their fans. All made possible with their 5G Edge Compute.
